Bed-Wetting & Chiropractic
As a parent, uncle and pediatric focused chiropractor I understand how childhood issues, such as bedwetting can effect social and emotional development in children. Children experience shame, embarrassment and a lack of confidence due to their inability to control their bladder.
Prior to age five, kids typically have poor control over their bladder at night. Older child should be in more control and when they are not, there may be a larger problem looming.
The two primary muscles in control of the bladder, the detrusor and trigone, muscles are controlled by nerves that resides in the lower back, lumbar and sacral areas. The sacrum is a bone that is created through the natural fusion of five smaller bones. Childhood falls and accidents while learning to walk or ride a bike could contribute to misalignment in these areas.
Medications can also play a role in disturbing the nervous system. The nervous system responds to chemical, physical and emotional threats. Most people think of chiropractic in terms of correcting a physical cause of a pain, it is far more common to have a chemical or emotional issue that the body is physically responding to with pain.

- A study of children with a history of persistent bed-wetting received eight chiropractic adjustments. The number of wet nights fell from seven a week to four a week. (JMPT 1991 (Feb);14 (2):110-115)
- The lumbar spine of an eight year old male bed-wetter was adjusted once and at a one month follow-up. There was a complete resolution of enuresis. “this happened in a manner that could not be attributed to time or placebo effect.” (JMPT 1994 (Jun);17(5):335-338
- A notable personal case, nine year-old male diabetic bed-wetter had been struggling with wet nights for over six months. The night after his first adjustment was his first dry night in months.
How Chiropractic Can Help
Chiropractors look for subtle misalignments in the spine that can cause the body to not function properly. Realignment often restores proper function to the body. For parents concerned with the idea of a forceful adjustment on a child, that is not the case, especially for someone trained in pediatrics. At HEROH Chiropractic we love working with children and many parents report childhood health problems resolving with our unique blend of chiropractic care.
